Chief Justices and Legislatively Created Obligations

State chief justices are well known as being the head of their respective courts of last resort (usually called supreme courts). They also function as the head of a state’s judicial branch, either ex officio, or collectively with the other members of  a court of last resort, or as head of a judicial council.

Far less well known are the obligations placed on chief justices that have little or nothing to do with their adjudicative or administrative roles. This week, we will be looking at some of the legislation proposed this cycle that would add additional responsibilities to the office of chief justice.
