NC: bill to bring back partisan races for appellate courts clears committee; proponents claim it is to give voters more info

A plan to bring back partisan races for North Carolina’s Supreme Court and Court of Appeals cleared the House Elections Committee yesterday. HB 8 of 2015 would in effect repeal SB 1054 of 2002 that shifted the appellate courts to nonpartisan races (the lower trial courts would remain nonpartisan contests).

Proponents told local media the effort was to give voters more information and that the current system isn’t truly nonpartisan. Opponents argued “it’s a bad idea for anybody sitting [on the appellate courts] with a partisan interest, voting on bills by a partisan General Assembly.”

HB 8 could be voted on by the full House as early as today.
