Oregon: bill expands ban on carrying weapons into courthouses to include Justice & Municipal Courts

Under current Oregon law,”court facilities” within which it is illegal to carry a weapon are limited to courthouses or portions of any other building occupied by the state’s four top courts (Circuit, Tax, Court of Appeals, and Supreme). Courthouses or portions of other buildings that hold only Justice Courts and Municipal Courts are not covered under ORS 166.360-166.380.

Draft bill 1588, as circulating, would amend the definition of “court facilities” to include Justice Courts and Municipal Courts. Moreover, it would expand “weapon” to includes certain knives now currently covered.

The bill has not been formally introduced or a committee assigned at this time.
