The plan to change the way governors can pick appellate judges as part of Florida’s merit selection system has now bypassed the entire House committee process. SJR 1188 had been approved by the full Senate on April 3 and left pending in the House since April 11. It would allow governors to name “prospectively” judges to fill vacancies that would not occur until the day the governor leaves office.
Yesterday a motion was made on the House floor to bring SJR 1188 directly to the House floor under the Special Order Calendar for a possible vote as early as today (see House Journal page 829 here and the Special Order Calendar for April 29 on page 11 here).
The timing is critical since the legislature has to adjourn by May 2.
