Illinois: legislatively created task force to examine court fees/fines may get 2 more years to work

Last year Illinois enacted HB 3111 the Access to Justice Act of 2013. The bill included various provisions related top providing legal services to those who otherwise could not afford them. One provision of the bill established a Statutory Court Fee Task Force “to conduct a thorough review of the various statutory fees imposed or assessed on criminal defendants and civil litigants.” The task force is to report to the Supreme Court and General Assembly on their findings by June 1, 2014. Under SB 3022 as introduced the task force report would not be due until June 1, 2016.

SB 3022 is currently pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
